Context & Challenge

Giving form to the intangible

Harappa's Thrive Skills framework covered complex, abstract learning concepts — resilience, empathy, critical thinking — that resisted conventional illustration. The challenge was building a visual system expressive enough to carry conceptual weight, yet structured enough to scale across hundreds of assets without losing coherence or brand consistency.

Objective

A living visual language

To design a cohesive mixed-media illustration system that could function as both a standalone creative body of work and a scalable brand asset library — flexible enough to extend across digital platforms, print publications, course content, and enterprise communications.

The Visual Grammar

Concept first, always

Each illustration begins with a behavioural or cognitive concept — leadership, critical inquiry, adaptability — and works outward into a metaphor, then a composition. The mixed-media approach layers photographic figures with rendered objects and archival textures to create imagery that feels simultaneously editorial and conceptual.

One language, every surface

The same pictorial grammar travels intact across every surface — anchoring full-page spreads and chapter moments across the 75 Thrive Skills and Growth Journal book series, driving course covers, thumbnails, and e-course interfaces on Thriversity, turning up in decks, brochures, and social posts, and carrying the brand into Harappa's global ad campaign. One system, everywhere.

Colour System

A desaturated, monochromatic photographic base punctuated by a single accent: Harappa Yellow. The accent appears on key objects only, directing the eye to the conceptual focal point within each composition. This restraint is what allows the library to feel cohesive across hundreds of disparate subjects.

These collages don't exist in isolation — they form the editorial backbone of Harappa's publishing output. The illustration library is deployed directly within the 75 Thrive Skills book series, where individual framed pieces anchor chapter openers and section dividers across the full publication run.

Process

Concept & Metaphor Development

For each Thrive Skill, building a conceptual brief — identifying the core behavioural idea, selecting a visual metaphor, and establishing the compositional logic before any image-making begins. This step ensured every piece had genuine intellectual grounding rather than aesthetic decoration.

Photographic & Archival Sourcing

Curating the photographic and archival layer — figures, objects, textures, botanical prints, scientific diagrams — that would form the mixed-media base. Building a sourcing vocabulary consistent enough to unify hundreds of distinct subjects under a single visual grammar.

Composition & Colour

Compositing each piece in Photoshop and Procreate — layering photographic elements with rendered objects, applying the desaturated base and Harappa Yellow accent system, and resolving each composition to work both as a standalone artwork and as a component within the larger library.

Library Build & Deployment

Producing both gallery-framed and field-edition variants for each concept, maintaining consistency across the expanding library, and preparing assets for deployment across digital platforms, print publications, and enterprise communications — including the 75 Thrive Skills book series.
